Ra.One Is A Class Apart

Gone are the days when the Indian movies were judged by the quality of sets, lavish song sequences and powerful dialogues. The arrival of Ra.One has changed the dynamics of Bollywood by introducing the viewers to science fiction, like never before. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Ra.One is titanic compared to all the recent Bollywood releases, especially the story-less Body Guard, the clueless Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and the hapless Mausam.

Ra.One carries the legacy of Robot, which was released last year and featured Rajnikanth in the title role and Aishwariya Rai-Bachchan as his love interest. Yet it seems bigger than the former because of the presence of Akon as playback singer and a cast featuring popular actors like Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Satish Shah, besides Shah Rukh Khan.

Ra.One is the story of a goofy game designer Shekhar (SRK), who is based in London and works for Barron Industries. While his wife Sonia (Kareena) thinks he is a great guy, his son Prateek aka Lucifer (Armaan Verma) sees him as a loser. In order to prove his worth and fulfill his son’s wish, Shehkar designs a motion-sensor based game in which the villain is far more powerful than the hero. As the movie progresses, the villain escapes to the real world and begins to track down the only person ever to defeat him, Lucifer. Shah Rukh Khan dies protecting his son but is resurrected as the protagonist G.One who, with the help of Lucifer (Verma), defeats the antagonist and saves the world.

SRK has done a double role in the movie, just like Dilip Kumar’s Raam Aur Shaam nearly 45 years ago. One of the roles is a ludicrous character whereas the other one is the champion, who is never wrong. SRK’s goofy appearance may seem new to many bu

The fans of TV show Monk believe that he has tried to ape Tony Shalhoub’s character of Adrian Monk, a detective with obsessive compulsive disorder.

While Kareena Kapoor continues to look beautiful in her movies and Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka Chopra and Ranjikanth appear in guest roles, Arjun Rampal steals the show as the title character Ra.One. He is everything a good villain should be and spends shivers down the viewers’ spine with his dialogue delivery and action sequences.

The film is an amalgamation of Terminator II: Judgment Day, Tron and many other science fiction flicks, but dethrones E.T. inspired Koi Mil Gaya and Krissh as the best sci-fi flick from Bollywood. The way Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay redefined Indian cinema in 1975, I believe Ra.One will have the same impact because it is something never done before in India. The action sequences are amazing and so is the 3D conversion of the flick. The animations have been handled by people who have worked in Hollywood, just like the stunts were managed by Americans in Sholay. Must watch if you want to see history in the making!
